According to a note issued by Morgan Stanley last week, it is predicted that Amazon will become the largest apparel retailer – by volume sold – in the US by the end of the year.
Walmart is currently the reigning ‘king’ of apparel retail, but bolstered by the loyalty of their ever-increasing Millennial customer base and by the rise in the number of shoppers enrolled in Amazon Prime, it’s predicted that by year’s end, Amazon will reign supreme. Of course, while there are winners, there are also losers, mostly department stores in this case. It’s estimated that Sears Holding, Macy’s, and JCPenney lost 0.8% in market share last year, while Target and Kohl’s were largely flat.
